Great Decisions: Global Famine Presented by Elizabeth Wheat, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay
Fears of global food shortages have followed Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has disrupted grain shipments from the major grain producer. But what about countries and regions that were suffering before this impending shortage? How is famine defined, and how is it different from simple food shortages? What if any remedies are there?
Presenter Bio: Elizabeth Wheat is an Associate Professor in Public and Environmental Affairs and Political Science at UW-Green Bay. She is originally from Marshall, Michigan, and completed her Master's Degree in Public Affairs at Indiana University and her doctorate in Political Science at Western Michigan University. She is currently pursuing a Master’s in Social Work at UW-Green Bay with a field placement at World Relief working with refugees. Elizabeth teaches courses in global environmental politics, environmental law and policy, natural resources, the presidency, fisheries and marine law, wildlife law, and sustainability. In most of her courses, students participate in mock trials, Model United Nations simulations, or environmental policy debates. Elizabeth also serves on the board for Midwest Environmental Advocates, Wisconsin Conservation Voters, and the Green Bay Water Utility. She is a proud dog mama to three rescue pups—Poofy, Knightley, and Foxy Loxy—and coexists with her adopted cat, a ragdoll named Dolly Pawton.
