The Japanese word kumihimo is 2 words, kumi comes from the verb kumu which means to braid and himo is a noun which means cord. The art of braiding with silk dates back to the T’ang Dynasty of China (618-907 AD) and braids that date back to 50 BC have been found in Korea. However, this braiding was brought to the highest order by the Japanese with their aesthetic ideal of combining function and beauty.
