Think of a sketchbook as a way for you to have your art with you and to connect with the visual world around you at all times.  This course led by Paula Swaydon Grebel introduces and encourages the habit of drawing.  We will play with a variety of dry and wet mediums, plus learn various techniques and styles.  The sketch book is your means to connect, research, gather, and be engaged with the world around us.

Paula Swaydan Grebel works from direct observation of nature. She investigates still life motifs and experimental framing devices as a constant reminder of paintings ability to surprise and trick the eye. Although she has been exploring the still life for a number of years, Swaydan Grebel notes that her paintings develop more out of an exploration of composition and style than from being inspired by a particular object. In this sense, Swaydan Grebel’s work documents the process of painting more than it depicts a specific arrangement.

Born in California, Paula Swaydan Grebel received her BFA with an emphasis in Figure Drawing and Minor in Textiles from the California State University of Long Beach. After moving to Wisconsin in the 1990s where she raised her two children, Swaydan Grebel has continued her education studying under key perceptual painters whose focus is to challenge what an observational painting can be. Her broad knowledge of art history and theory informs her paintings as well. She has given workshops and been a visiting artist at painting programs throughout the US. You will find her work in numerous public and private collections throughout the United States and Internationally. Represented by Tory Folliard Gallery, WI.
