Join us online for the fourth annual Tea & Tech Talk: Girls' STEM Day!

Ada Lovelace Day is an international holiday that recognizes the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  Girls ages 8 - 14 can participate in this virtual Ada Lovelace Day-inspired day of activities which also coincides with the Wisconsin Science Festival. 

Virtual activities will include a keynote presentation by NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory engineer Janelle Wellons; Engineering Design and Coding with Tinkercad with Isabel Mendiola of Gearbox Labs, Curiosity Lab: Chemiluminescence and Curiosity Experiments with MilliporeSigma’s Dr. Angelika Henke and Allison Warn, and a behind-the-scenes virtual tour of MilliporeSigma’s Quality Control; presentations by Milwaukee School of Engineering alumni, Rachel Hunter and Sabrina Stangler, and lightning talks by local women in STEM followed by a virtual tea time, with tea and cookies provided by Starbucks.

9:00am - Welcome 

9:05am - Why We're Here: The Importance of Talking about Womxn in STEM with Rachel Hunter and Sabrina Stangler
Discuss why it is important to have conversations with and about womxn in STEM and how to see yourself with confidence. We will also be discussing internalized misogyny and imposter syndrome, two of the biggest roadblocks to young girls who are considering a career in STEM - and how to overcome them and recognize your value and self-worth. 

9:50am - Lightning Talks with Local Women in STEM
Isabel Mendiola, Karli Thornton, Stefanie Nester, Rachna Sachwani, Amy Wisth, Kim Koch, and Morgan Lindahl 

 

10:30am - Journey to JPL with Janelle Wellons, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory engineer
Janelle Wellons will speak about her non-traditional path to the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory that started with a simple pamphlet in the mail.

11:30am - Tea, Q & A with the Presenters

1:45pm - Engineering Design and Coding with Tinkercad with Isabel Mendiola, Gearbox Labs
Explore engineering coding, design and prototyping using Autocad's Tinkercad, a free online platform designed to teach STEAM skills in its circuits section . The platform simulates the Arduino (R) UNO microcontroller to build devices that control robotic servos, takes input from digital thermometers and gas sensors, and displays data from LCD screens. Engineers use Arduino (R) UNO to build prototypes of the products they want to put in devices like refrigerators, cars and homes. Author Isabel Mendiola will lead the participants through the basics of Tinkercad and help them develop a project that controls servos as found in the arms and legs of robots. Participants should register for a free Tinkercad account before the workshop at www.tinkercad.com
