What is a 'zine? Zines are noncommercial, often homemade publications (short for "magazine", pronounced "zeen" & commonly called a "fanzine"). They are beloved by fringe-dwellers and DIY-ers for their versatility and economy. Usually devoted to specialized and often unconventional subject matter, origins of the modern 'zine can be traced back to 1960s sci-fi fandom and underground comix, the democratic mulitple movement of the 1970s, punk rock fandom of the 1980s, as well as the vibrant Riot Grrrl scene of the 1990s.
Join Mead librarian Molly and local artist Travis for the first of three 'zine making workshops. This week will focus on creating content for your 'zine as well as some simple to reproduce book forms.
Still not sure what a 'zine is? Use THIS link to visit a list of cutting edge 'zines published online. Also expect to see plenty of examples the day of the workshop, as well.
