Crossing the Line: The Milwaukee Fair Housing Marches of 1967-1968

at Mead Public Library Wednesday, April 11, 2018 - Tuesday, May 1, 2018

How do citizens work for change when faced with injustice? How can individuals make a difference? What can you do to end segregation today?

The Wisconsin Historical Society is providing local public libraries, historical societies, schools, and community organizations around the state with a traveling display about Milwaukee's fair housing movement. Called "Crossing the Line: The Fair Housing Marches of 1967-1968," it reproduces photographs and documents from the Society's collection in Madison. Its eight panels examine the practices and prejudices that led to segregation in Milwaukee and chronicle the school desegregation and fair housing movements of the 1960s.

The traveling display has been created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Milwaukee's fair housing marches. The Wisconsin Historical Society gratefully acknowledges the Milwaukee County Historical Society, Wisconsin Black Historical Society and Museum, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and March on Milwaukee 50th Anniversary Coordinating Committee for their help developing content for this exhibit.
